The Best Motorcycle Gear For Every Rider

Much like any other sport out there that features several variants or iterations within, motorcycle riding is something that is highly gear-centric. From tuning up to speeding across the untouched mountainous terrain, every step of the way involves a piece or a tool or an article of clothing that was purposed or built specifically for riding a motorcycle. These pieces are also unique to the type of bike – or rider – and how each bike is meant to perform on the road. Cruising to work on a cafe racer? Tearing across the tarmac on a Ducati? Or ripping through the off-road trails on the weekend? There’s a bike and a bike kit for you.

From here, we took these three favorite pastimes of riding and put our curation skills to good use. That is, compiling three different kits – along with the bikes to go with them – for three separate riders: the casual urban commuter, the sportbike enthusiast, and the adventurer. Because like music, each type of ride carries with it a different ring to it. All while facilitating the perpetual movement of the individual. So whether you’re a weekend warrior or diehard rider, we’re confident you’ll find something here that draws the eye.

The Casual R > Keepers of Cool

Don’t let the casual nature of this type of rider fool you. He still means business. And ironically enough, it’s these types of riders who get the most use out of their bikes thanks in part of the ergonomics of the ride and style of the bike. This is the guy who idolizes Steve McQueen, sporting stylish – yet necessary – gear that looks the part from the road to the office to the nearest watering hole after hours. No track suits here, instead we have quality “civilian” gear that doesn’t set the causal urban commuter too far apart from the rest of the four-wheeled herd.

In this instance, we’re talking about motorcycle jeans that boast some serious strength and are outfitted to protect the skin if the time ever comes to lay the bike down. Or, a stylish helmet from one of the most well-known and trusted brands around. And unless you want you hands totally exposed to the elements and unforgiving asphalt, a pair of gloves from a trusted California brand are a must as well. As for the jacket? This should be self-explanatory by now.

The Bike: Triumph Bonneville

As one of the more popular rides around, Triumph has worked to maintain their iconic look over years of iterations. The Triumph Bonneville, in particular, pays a bit of homage to their classic ’59 version that turned so many heads back in the day. It boasts a T100 chassis and a powerful 900cc Triumph engine that will surely get you up and out in a quick, stylish and dependable man ner. ($9,300)

The Sportbike Enthusiast

Life in the Fast Lane

Outfitted for those with serious speed on their minds, sportbikes are the extraordinarily fast and powerful members of the motorcycle family. While some serve as proper starter bikes others boast enough go-power to feel like a rocket between your legs. In this case, these bikes don’t mess around. And neither do their dedicated riders. From the street to the track on the weekends, these individuals push the limits of adrenaline on a daily basis. Needless to say, the gear in this instance must stand up to the challenge – and risk – involved in riding these powerful machines on a daily basis.

For this speedy street demon, the gear is about as aggressive as it comes. From a mean, sleek, and aerodynamic icon helmet to reliable street gloves outfitted to protect your hands from the constant risk of asphalt invasion to boots and a textile jacket to keep you covered, gear in this regard is outfitted strictly for the rider. In other words, there’s no hiding in plain sight here. But hey, isn’t that why you got your hands on a sportbike in the first place?

The Bike: Ducati Supersport

For those riders who simply don’t want to mess around, the Ducati Supersport is built out for adrenaline junkies who want to push the ground speed limits of mankind either on their way to work or at the track on the weekends. It’s powered by a Tertastretta 11″ engine that pushes out 113 horses along with a single-sided swingarm, sculpted tank, adjustable Plexiglass screen and three separate riding modes depending on your mood at the time. Forma Adventure Boots ($279)

The Adventurist

Road Less Traveled

The explorer, the backcountry camper, the nomad, the off-road weekend warrior. All these designations can be used to accurately describe anyone who’s into adventure motorcycles. Also known as dual-sport bikes, these rides are outfitted to perform both on and off the pavement. However, the real magic occurs when once these knobby tires hit the dirt, for not only do you find solace in the fact that the city is finally behind you, but these bikes offer one hell of a ride in the off-road landscape. Needless to say, for consistency, we went with five pieces of essential gear here though clearly so much more can be utilized for a safe ride through the wilderness.

Our suggestion? Either go with a suit for this ride that will help your body breathe while keeping the rest of your clothing underneath safe from inevitable mud and dirt or pair some pants and a jacket from a trusted brand like Raiden. Also, you’re going to want to invest in quality adventure boots. These clearly need to be the most durable pair you own – ideally waterproof to the highest degree. Gloves that can stand up to the elements are always a good call as well, as is an adventure helmet to keep the sun our of your eyes and your head protected. What’s not listed, but also a solid idea would be a hydration pack – especially if you find yourself trekking through the desert on a hot afternoon.

The Bike: KTM Adventure R

At the heart and soul of the KTM Adventure line is the KTM Adventure R. It’s the sporty and raw member of the family that’s built specifically for off-road traveling and prepared to take you to any rough and rugged road at the end of the earth. And with a displacement of 1195cc thanks to a reliable 2-cylinder 4-stroke engine, there’s always enough juice to turn the heat up in even the hottest of terrains. ($17,000)

What size motorcycle suits me best?

Just as you wouldn’t buy a t-shirt without knowing it fits, so you must consider physical motorcycle sizes if you want to avoid regretting a much more significant purchasing decision.

Yes, size (of motorcycle) does matter, and manufacturers such as Triumph spend untold amounts of time on getting a motorcycle to feel great and perform superbly to maximise the sheer joy of the ride for as many shapes and sizes as possible.

So to help with that question, “How big a bike should I get?”, here’s a quick guide to point you in the right direction.

How to test if a motorcycle size suits your needs?

The most important thing to consider is pretty fundamental; what do you want to predominantly use your bike for? Obviously there’s a big difference between leisurely cruising to Lands’ End, off-roading over dust and gravel tracks, and ripping it up on a track day as fast as you dare; which is why Triumph manufacture very different motorcycle sizes under categories such as ‘Cruisers’, ‘Adventure and Touring’, and ‘Roadsters and Supersports’.

Another thing to think about is engine size. A 1200cc Bonneville Bobber might well prove too powerful for a total beginner to handle, whereas an A2 licence compliant modern classic Street Twin is probably a much more sensible option.

Bike weight may also be a consideration you should think about. Triumph’s Rocket III, for example, has an engine which at 2,294cc is the largest factory-produced motorcycle engine in the world and virtually guarantees admiring glances wherever you go; but as the rider of the beast you need to be aware that such a huge engine is, well, heavy and will therefore unavoidably on occasion require a certain level of physical strength to handle.

Other things to think about include; are you fit with strong wrists (some angled handlebars can place weight on those particular joints), do you relish the physical demands of a forward-leaning riding position (not so good for bad backs), and would you prefer an upright seated riding position (maybe a bike more suited to cruising or touring is better for you).

Bike manufacturers often produce a whole range of models, and your choice today has never been better, so make use of it!

What type of bike suits what type of body size?

Whether you’re tall, short, heavy or light, these days good quality motorcycles have ways in which you can modify aspects such as seat height, handlebar height, and the amount that the suspension ‘gives’ when you sit on your bike. Such modifications can usually be made by simply using an Allen key or screwdriver to adjust the factory settings (which, naturally, are usually set for an average person of medium weight).

Obviously such changes are finite, so always check the spec of a bike before you buy it to check on how much adjustment you can make (for example, this is the specification for a Triumph Street Triple RS, and includes info such as seat height, handlebar width and the ‘give’ or ‘travel’ of front and rear suspension).

Of course, the best way to assess all this for a Triumph bike is by calling into a Triumph dealer and actually sitting on the bike in question. The great thing about this is you’ll find that dealers are absolutely delighted to explain precisely how to do this and how to set up your new bike to optimise comfort, performance and, ultimately, the enjoyment of your ride.

One other option if you’re worried about your inside leg measurement is the ‘Low Ride Height’ model; for example Triumph’s Tiger 1200 Range offers bikes with a lower seat height.

In a nutshell.

If we’re honest, a huge part of riding is the desire to look and feel great while we’re doing it.

As we’ve now seen, it’s pretty easy to make pre-purchase checks to avoid choosing an inappropriately sized motorcycle. And after all, no-one wants to waste money on buying a bike that’s too big or too small, or simply not fit for your purpose.

So do your research, get the right size of motorcycle for you, then sit back (or forwards) and enjoy the ride!

We all know that the world shown in motorcycle advertisements isn’t real. As much as we’d like it, the sun doesn’t always shine, and we aren’t the only vehicle on the road. We can always dream, though. When it comes to bad weather, we all have to deal with it sometime – even those of us who res > For the rest of us, a rain suit over our regular r >

When it comes to rain gear, the camps are pretty evenly div > One-piece suits are easier to don and doff, while two-piece suits can more easily accept differing body types. Regardless of what you use, they’ll go a long way towards making a wet ride a fun one. Here is a selection of the best motorcycle rain gear we’ve found.

Dainese Storm Jacket and Pants – $130/$95

The Dainese Storm Jacket and Storm Pants offer comfort and dryness to your ride thanks to its breathable knitted fabric. This stretchable fabric allows free movement on the motorcycle without sacrificing waterproofness. The pants feature an elasticized waist and an adjustable cuff. The jacket includes an integrated hood along with an internal waterproof pocket. The jacket and pants are ultrasonically welded for a no-seam construction, and its four-way stretch material and coated zip closure offer the ultimate in comfort – on and off your motorcycle. The jacket is available in men’s sizes XS-2XL and women’s sizes XS-2XL in Black-Flou Yellow or Flou Yellow. The pants are sized men’s and women’s XS-2XL in Black only.

Firstgear Rainman Jacket and Splash Rain Pants – $90/$80

The Firstgear Rainman Jacket is your basic motorcycle rain jacket, but don’t let that fool you. First, it is waterproof with fully taped seams, and the jacket’s breathability means that the interior doesn’t get too stuffy on a long, rainy ride. There are dual chest pockets for carrying little essentials. Plus, the integrated rain hood can be stowed in a collar pocket. The set-and-forget waist strap keeps any flapping to a minimum at speed. The jacket is stored in its own integrated stuff sack. Two colors are available Black-Silver and Black-Yellow in sizes S-4XL for $90. The Firstgear Splash Pant is available in Black only in sizes S-4XL and features the same breathable construction with taped seams. An elastic waist provides comfort, and ankle to knee zippers allow easy entry with boots on. The pants also include their own integrated stuff sack.

Klim Forecast Jacket and Pants – $200/$200

The Klim Forecast Jacket and Pants are sold separately, but they are constructed of the same guaranteed-to-keep-you-dry materials. Constructed with Gore-Tex Paclite two-layer laminate technology, the Forecast gear keeps the rain out while allowing the r >

Oxford Rain Seal Over Jacket and Pants – $50/$30

The Oxford Rain Seal Over Jacket and Pants are simple-yet-effective tools for keeping the rain out. Don’t expect any bells or whistles, but you do get reflective striping and a choice of Black or Hi-Viz Yellow colors. The gear is fully lined, and the seams are water resistant. The cuffs are adjustable. The pants have an elastic waistband and adjustable ankle openings. All of this for a reasonable price in sizes S-6XL (no, that’s not a typo).

REV’IT! Pacific 2 H2O Rain Suit – $130

The REV’IT! Pacific 2 H2O Rain Suit comes in two colors, though we can’t imagine why anyone would buy the all-black version that, with the exception of the 3M Scotchlite laminated retroreflective stripes that light up in headlights, renders you all-but-invisible in poor weather. We’d opt for the Neon Yellow-Black version that makes you virtually impossible not to see. The suit itself is made of ultra-light and packable PVC-free polyester Oxford material that is 100% waterproof and breathable. Climbing in and out of the suit is made easier by the zipper that slants from the left side of the neck to the right knee. To keep the elements on the outside, adjustments are available at the collar, upper arm, and the cuffs and ankles. Additionally, suit flap is minimized by adjustment straps at the waist. The REV’IT! Pacific 2 H2O Rain Suit is available in sizes S-3XL.

Spidi Touring Two Piece Rain Suit – $160

The Spidi Touring Two Piece Rain Suit (and the Spidi Touring Two Piece Women’s Rainsuit) have got you covered. The polyurethane nylon fabric construction will keep you dry, while the fluorescent yellow panels and reflective striping will make sure you are seen during the impaired visibility of a storm. The waist is adjustable. The cuffs, too, can be adjusted to accommodate different glove and boot sizes. The center storm flap prevents water intrusion past the central zipper. Finally, it packs away in its included stuff sack for easy storage. The Spidi Touring Two Piece Rain Suit is available in sizes SM-3XL,.

Tour Master Defender 2.0 Two Piece Rain Suit – $110

The Tour Master Defender 2.0 Two Piece Rain Suit builds on the strengths of the first generation suit by including special updates. The waterproof chest pocket has been lowered and is vertical in its orientation – perfect for phones and other frequently accessed items. More reflective piping and triangles mean better conspicuity in conditions with limited visibility. One of the Defender’s unique features is the Aqua-Barrier Under-the-Helmet-Hood to prevent the dreaded down the back of the neck drip on long, wet rides. When not required, the hood tucks neatly away in the hidden collar pocket. For comfort, the collar is also lined with microfiber material, while polyester mesh combines with the underarm vents to promote moisture-reducing airflow. The pants have both suspenders and stirrups to keep them in place on and off the motorcycle. Additionally, the flex panel at the waist provides a comfortable fit in a seated position. Elastic cuffs on the sleeves and pant legs help to keep water out, as does the zipper’s storm flap. The Tour Master Defender 2.0 Two Piece Rain Suit is available in Black-Black, Black-Red, Black-Blue, and Black-Yellow in sizes XS-4XL.

This post written by Mr. John Clay. John runs the Motorcycle Info blog and would love to help you get started in this great hobby. Stop by and check his great content on this outdoor hobby!

Do you ever find yourself watching people riding motorcycles and wondering what it would be like to have your own motorcycle? Motorcycle riding is a great hobby, especially if you are looking for an escape from the trivial things of everyday life. You don’t have to spend a fortune on a huge chrome hog to participate in one of the fastest growing hobbies. Your first task will be to research motorcycle info to try to decide which type of motorcycle or scooter matches your skill level and personal style.

I want to mention scooters for a moment here since these have become extremely popular over the past 5 years, especially with the spike in gas prices. There are several scooters, known as maxi scooters, that are every bit as fast as small motorcycles. Maxi scooters are great for commuters, and you can even get an electric one from Vectrix that plugs into a normal outlet for recharging, but is also capable of reaching highway speeds. Scooters don’t match everyone’s tastes, but for new riders and daily commuting, these can be an economical way to go. If you don’t think today’s scooters are very cool, you can pick up a restored Harley-Davidson scooter on eBay for about the same cost and ride in style while enjoying this cool hobby.

Back to motorcycles. Do you plan to ride on the street, off-road, or a maybe a mix of both? If you plan to ride on the street, and this will be your first motorcycle, skip down to the next paragraph. If you plan to ride off-road only, then it’s a little easier to get started, but you’ll still need some help selecting a motorcycle that is right for you. Don’t forget that to enjoy dirt bikes, you’ll need a place to ride it. I found out the hard way growing up that most people don’t want dirt bikes riding on their property, even if it is just an old field or woods, because of noise and the fear of injury liability. You’ll eventually end up in trouble if you don’t get the land owner’s permission beforehand. The sales folks in motorcycle shops normally have been in this hobby for a long time and they can help guide you towards a good off road bike to fit you and they usually know of good and legal places where you can take it to ride. There are amateur motocross racing events that just about anyone can participate in regardless of skill level. Motocross racers often pass along their hobby to their kids. Kids can start out on 50cc mini dirt bikes in a special class just for them. A lot of families get their kids involved in the hobby of motocross as a way to build strength and confidence, but also for the family bonding that comes from traveling on weekends to events and camping out together.

If you plan to ride on the street, you’ll need to get a motorcycle license. It’s pretty easy to get a learner’s permit by studying the motorcycle handbook available online or at your local motor vehicle license office and taking the written test. Many states allow you to ride with just a learner’s permit for between 6 months to 18 months before you take your road test to get your actual license. Once you get your permit, the next step is to sign yourself up for a Beginner Rider Course at a community college near you. These courses are very fun and well worth attending since what you learn may save your life. Even if you have some riding experience, it’s a very smart idea to take a refresher course or Experienced Rider Course before you get back out on the streets.

The most popular styles of motorcycles for street are cruisers, sport bikes (some times called crotch rockets), sport touring, and touring. Today there are all sorts of new types of street bikes that don’t fit in any of these traditional classes. You can even get an automatic motorcycle from Honda, Aprilia and Ridley if having to shift gears is one of the reasons that you have avoided having a motorcycle hobby.

If you’re just starting the hobby of motorcycle riding, then buying a good used motorcycle is the way to go. It will take you a while to figure out what type of motorcycle fits your riding style and what level of performance you need from a motorcycle. I recommend searching for motorcycles on eBay because you can quickly locate a lot of different used ones near you by entering in your zip code. You’ll also get a good feel for what used motorcycles cost. From my experience, there are often much better choices for used motorcycles on eBay than you can find at motorcycle shops. Plan on setting aside enough money, maybe $500 for a set of new tires and to replace standard wear items such as a chain and sprockets, oil, coolant, etc.

In addition to getting your motorcycle, you’ll also need to set aside some money for the riding gear that you will need. For some riders, this can be an expensive and addicting part of the hobby. You’ll need to at least get a helmet, jacket, gloves and boots. Helmets come as full-face or open-face, and what you choose is up to you, but make sure it fits properly. That seems simple, but a properly fitting helmet makes a world of difference in terms of safety and your riding comfort. Too loose and the wind will lift it, but too tight will give you a real headache. DOT-approved is the minimum standard. Snell-approved is tougher standard and is good to look for in a helmet. Some folks prefer modular helmets that are full-face, but you can flip up the front. Modular helmets are often a little heavier, a little noisier from the wind, and are usually not Snell-approved. This does not make them a bad choice though, it’s just a personal preference thing.

Don’t plan on wearing a regular jacket for motorcycle riding on the street because regular jackets will usually balloon up from the wind or will flap and distract you. Leather is always a good choice for protecting your own hide from the wind and road, but there are a lot of new durable textile motorcycle jackets that do a great job without overheating you on warm days. Many modern motorcycle jackets come with armor or extra protection at the shoulders and elbows. Remember that it always feels a lot colder when riding a motorcycle, so your jacket will get more use than you might think.

Boots for street bikes should cover your ankle, and should have some sort of reinforcement around the left toe so that a standard shift lever won’t wear through there too quickly. Sneakers don’t offer any protection from hot engine parts and can be slippery on your foot pegs. The laces in sneakers or on boots can get caught on your motorcycle and you’ll end up in big trouble. For off-road riding, anything from a good pair of work boots to a pair of real motocross racing boots will do. Off-road riding often involves tree roots and wet or muddy riding, so make sure you have boots that are ready for that kind of action. Even when off-road riding on hot sunny days, you’ll end up on trails that have big mud puddles and ruts, so this is where good boots will be a plus.

To put aside a budget for your new motorcycle hobby, it’s possible to get started with a decent motorcycle helmet, gloves, boots, and jacket all for about $350 or $400 total, but you’re sure to see nicer gear for more money that will be very tempting. Online stores are usually where you’ll find the best prices for all sorts of motorcycle gear.

Once you get into the motorcycle hobby, you’ll discover that there are loads of motorcycle accessories that you can get to customize your ride. Some accessories are practical, such as heated grips or a motorcycle windshield, but some are just for looking cool, like chrome parts and custom wheels.

How deeply you dive into the motorcycle hobby is up to you, but you don’t have to spend a ton of money to get started. Just about any motorcycle is fun to ride, whether on the streets or off-road. Having the right gear will help you enjoy your new hobby and to do it safely. It’s not about how much money you spend on your gear or your bike, it’s about getting outside and riding and enjoying the freedom, adventure and friendships that this hobby has to offer.

I know people who ride a lot, Iron Butt types on big tourers, who swear by Roadcrafters for long haul riding. My Klim and Dainese stuff wasn’t cheap either so I won’t hammer them on price if it works as advertised. If I’m being honest though I’m a little too vain to wear a pair what look like cross between a Carhartt duck suit and pajamas – they seriously look ridiculous to me. Especially in hi-viz. That is a silly reason to discount something if it’s functional but. Rukka, Alpinstars, Rev’It and Klim all achieve the same end for about the same $ and still manage to look somewhat less like a snowmobile suit. Plus, I’m a jacket pants sort of guy because I like the idea of mixing and matching. Sometimes if I’m going offroad I wear the heavy duty Klim jacket and Fly armored motorcross pants. When I go to Nova Scotia in July on the XR I’ll wear the same jacket but with more touring oriented weatherproof pants. Sometimes I wear a mesh jacket and sliders cargo pants. I end up with $2k in gear anyway but not all at once and what I have will suit the ride rather than be one size fits all. At least in theory. Maybe.

Oh, their Darian pants are the shiz – very well made so I imagine there is no quality issue with the suits if they meet your criteria for riding.

Why Wearing Jeans on a Motorcycle is Bad

You are out on a pleasant motorcycle ride. It’s a warm, sunny afternoon, your bike is in good condition and you are in good condition. You’re wearing a full-face helmet, a jacket, jeans, gloves, and boots. You are prepared for the worst, but so far, this ride is the best.

You’re riding a familiar country road and you approach a right hand curve. Since you know this route, you relax your attention and it’s a little too late when you notice some stray sand that has somehow been thrown off the shoulder into the road. The front tire hits the sand while you are already leaned over. It washes out and you are down. You slide across the road and into the dirt on the opposite side. Luckily, your bike slid away from you. You are even luckier because there was no oncoming traffic. You pick yourself up. Your helmet’s chin bar has done its job, as has the entire front of your jacket, your gloves and your boots. However, your legs are starting to hurt. You look down and see that your jeans have been torn up and you have road rash that is also full of dirt. That will be extremely unpleasant to clean. You were wearing a pair of street jeans. Not good.

The lesson here? If you wear normal street jeans to go riding, then you may as well be wearing nothing.

Your garden variety street jeans offer no protection whatsoever for motorcycle riding. That’s the simple fact. If you ride in a pair of Levi’s, Lee, Wrangler, Guess or whatever, then stop doing so and get actual motorcycle-oriented pants.

Street jeans do not have the fiber density (they are not heavy enough) to withstand several seconds of sliding on asphalt from urban speeds, let along highway speeds. Basically, they are just not thick enough to be used for motorcycle riding. Street jeans are essentially one layer of denim or dungaree, which are both cotton fabrics. They are certainly more durable than garments made from other standard fabrics and are also woven in a different way for a little added strength over other cotton garments.

However, even the heaviest single layer of denim cannot offer the abrasion resistance needed to protect you in case of a fall. On top of that, the stitching used in street jeans is not as strong as the stitching used in motorcycle-specific pants. Street jeans may help you if you trip, or even tumble off a skateboard or bicycle, but they can actually still sustain some damage in those cases. You can travel much faster on a motorcycle, and road conditions and texture can vary.

Your riding pants must come from an actual motorcycle-oriented store. Let’s take a quick look at your options:

Motorcycle Under Pants

If you wish to stay in your street pants for whatever reason, then this is one of two options. Protective under pants aren’t as widely available, but some manufacturers offer under layers made from Kevlar or other strong material. This way, you can keep the style of your favorite pair of jeans while still having an unseen layer of abrasion resistance underneath. Consider this the bare minimum.

Motorcycle Over Pants

Over pants are designed to fit on top of pants you are already wearing, so they’ll be slightly baggy in appearance. They will generally be a little more functional than riding jeans, with even more abrasion-resistant material, more reinforcement, even better stitching, and more color choices (including high visibility options). Some may also be waterproof.

Motorcycle Riding Jeans

These offer the most seamless transition from a pair of street jeans. Cosmetically, they are similar, so you can expect the same sort of fit and comfort that you’d get from street jeans. Riding jeans, however, have several advantages: they are made from heavier denim; they are lined with abrasion-resistant material such as Kevlar or Aramid; they feature double or triple stitching; high impact areas are reinforced; you can insert foam pads. Prices range from around the $100 mark to over $300, but considering the fact that some designer street labels cost that much or more, it’s definitely worth the money spent.

Textile Motorcycle Pants

Textile pants are generally made from abrasion resistant fabric such as Cordula or Aramid. This is the best abrasion resistance you can get outside of leather. Once again, you’ll get the benefit of reinforcement, better stitching, and color options. In addition, most will feature built-in armor and some will even offer you the ability to fit knee pucks.

Leather Motorcycle Pants

At the top of the ladder are leather pants. Leather offers you the most abrasion resistance. While textile gear is generally good for one use, leather may be re-used, repaired, and cleaned. Many leather pants are also made with matching jackets that you can purchase separately, or you can mix-and-match. Overall, that will ensure maximum coverage and protection.

Bonus: One-Piece Riding Suit

If you are inclined to remain in street clothes from top to bottom, then your only option for protection is a one-piece suit – specifically, one that is designed to fit on top of everything. Aerostich is the most well-known manufacturer of such suits, but there are other options out there. Abrasion resistance, armor and weather protection are all satisfied with such suits.

So, as you can see, there are options available when it comes to suitable motorcycle riding pants. They are made solely with your safety in mind, both on the bike and if you happen to come off the bike. With all this in mind, there should be no reason for you to settle for street pants and the complete lack of protection they offer for motorcycle riding. Always go for the safer option and protect yourself as much as you can.

Best Motorcycle Rain Suits

Best Motorcycle Rain Suits

If you love to ride a motorcycle, then you will get caught in the rain. You might think rain is one of your worst enemies, but it doesn’t have to be. You certainly should not let a little rain (or a massive downpour) stop you from riding your motorcycle. If you gear-up well with the best motorcycle rain suit for you, you’ll be able to ride safely. And, perhaps, look good too.

Types of Modern Motorcycle Rain Suits for Men and Women

These days, we should be thankful for the modern comfort we have as riders – we’ve got new gadgets, amazing new bikes, and major improvements in comfort and safety in motorcycle rain suits for men and for women. Gone are the days when we have to wear big and bulky rain suits. We don’t have to stuff those old vinyl hot-boxes into our side-bags. Those things that are so very uncomfortable to wear. In those “olden days” wearing suits like that made riding a motorcycle in the rain even harder, and most of the time we might have chosen to stay at home.

Too, with a lot more women riders today, style and fit have come as long a way as safety in motorcycle rain gear. Women riders can appreciate the safety that the rain suits can give and sometimes the added bonus of a reasonable female style, unlike before when the suits we just made for the guys. Guys should also appreciate the more modern look and high quality materials of motorcycle rain gear today.

If we talk rain suits, there are two kinds of rain suits for motorcycle riders – the one-piece rain suit and the jacket-pants combination or, more commonly known as as the two-piece motorcycle rain suit.

The best motorcycle rain suit for you will depend on your style, needs and budget.

One-piece and 2-piece motorcycle rain suits

One-piece motorcycle rain suits are jacket and pants together with a seamless cut. This type if suit resembles a coverall but the material used in making the suit will be selected specifically to protect you from the rain. Though most often the best fitting rain suits, some people say it makes you look like a prisoner.

The separate jacket and pants are the more preferred rain gear of most riders because they can be very comfortable and convenient to wear. Riders especially appreciate the ease of quickly suiting-up when the rain suddenly pours – that is just putting on a jacket and pulling up your pants. There are variations on a theme with jackets that have a hood and some that don’t; pants with pockets, some without. Lots of different features to go around.

The Good and the Bad of Motorcycle Rain Suits

The main benefit of motorcycle rain suits is that when riding (especially when touring) these will really shield you from the elements. We often think our road leathers will “do the trick” but those will last less time than you think as protection from the rain. Distractions like being cold, puddles in your boots, wet pants, rain down your neck can lead to lack of focus. That’s dangerous. Even on a day that starts out sunny, it’s good to pack a rain suit with you. Weather is unpredictable and it pays to be always ready.

One-piece motorcycle rain gear can be very bulky. To put on a one-piece suit often takes more time. To do so on the road, you probably need to stop and look for dry cover where you can put your rain suit on. Highway underpasses do make good shelters. When the jacket part or the pants part suddenly rips, you need to replace the entire suit unless you find an excellent tailor who can mend the suit for you, hopefully at a price less than buying a new suit.

However, if you are after peak protection, then a one-piece suit will be the best motorcycle rain suit. It will most shield your body from the rain. There is no seam-break between jacket and pants in a one-piece motorcycle rain suit. Too, the suits are often cut tighter to your body so the jacket does not “flap” while riding. The onesie offers the best protection – your midriff isn’t exposed and the jacket won’t lift-up your back as you ride. It is more comfortable to ride wearing the one-piece suit and it can provide a great fit.

Two-piece rain suits for riders offer less protection than the one-piece simply because they can separate. In a crash, the jacket can ride-up your back, exposing your body. Newer models often have extra long tails to avoid this. Some people find the lower parts of a jacket flapping in the wind too annoying and irritating to ride comfortably. But, you can easily pack a jacket and pants combination with less bulk compared to a one-piece. You can easily replace the pants or jacket in case one is damaged. It is easy to slip on the jacket and pull up the pants if caught in a sudden rain. And many of today’s jackets are multipurpose – good in any weather.

Choosing the Best Motorcycle Rain Suit

Know that the best motorcycle rain suit is the one that can fully protect and safeguard you from the rain. Safety must always come first before fashion (although most rain gear today are stylish).

But you must have a suit as part of your gear. Being a frequent rider, you are destined to get caught in the rain. Don’t let a little rain spoil a good day. Buy a one-piece or two-piece rain suit, pack it, and wear it when you need to.
